Welcome to Kindergarten!

If you desire to walk your child to the classroom on the first day of school, we encourage short and sweet good-byes.  Classes will start promptly at 8:30 or as soon as the last bus arrives. Thank you.

We will be spending the first weeks of school getting to know each other. We will also be introducing students to classroom materials and practicing the routines/procedures of school including our math and guided reading centers. We look forward to a fantastic kindergarten year. If you have any questions regarding school/kindergarten do not hesitate to contact your teacher.

LITERATURE

The Kissing Hand & First Day Jitters
We will be focusing on identifying the title, front/back of book, author and illustrator, and making connections to the text through our class discussions and activities.

MATH
During the months of September and October students will work on the following skills:
·         numbers 0-10 (ordering, identifying, representing, and writing)
·         matching and sorting 
·         2-dimensional shapes
·         patterns 
Throughout the year students will explore math through open-ended- problem solving journals, math stations, ipads/ipods, IXL, rekenreks, and a variety of math manipulatives.

HANDWRITING

Students will practice the basic handwriting strokes, pencil grip, and correct posture.

A couple of dates to mark on your calendar:

·         On Saturday, August 16^th we will be sprucing up the school and having ice cream!  This is an all day event for all families (come and go as your schedule allows).  It begins at 8:00 a.m.   Child care provided 10 am-noon by National Junior Honor Society members.

·    Cologne Academy’s Kindergarten team welcomes you and your incoming kindergartener to attend our Kindergarten Open House on August 19^th, 5:30-6:30.  You and your child will have an opportunity to start the year off by visiting the classroom together, meeting the teacher, and getting acquainted with the school while exploring our self-directed stations.  We hope you will take this opportunity to get to know fellow kindergarten parents and classmates. 

·         Immediately following the Kindergarten open house is New Family Orientation for all grades (in the cafeteria) from 6:30-7:30 p.m, August 19th.  The children are invited to join their future classmates and teachers on the playground while parents/guardians attend the New Family Orientation in the cafeteria.  

·         Pre-conferences will be held on Tuesday, August 26^th from 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.  This will be a chance for you and your child(ren) to meet their teacher, drop off school supplies, turn in completed forms, pick up their bus pass, ask questions, etc…  Go to www.mysignup.com/caconferences to schedule your conference time.   During the  conference, we will meet briefly with your kindergarten student for an informal reading assessment.
